Common Habits That Could Damage Your Health

  • April 22, 2025

Some of the most common habits well known for being detrimental to your health are smoking, not having proper sleep, dehydration, and poor dietary habits. But there are a number of other habits that we take part in unknowingly that can prove to be harmful to our health.

These seemingly insignificant, harmless things can be damaging to our well-being in the long run. So, without further ado, here are some of those innocuous habits which we adopt thinking they are harmless but could prove otherwise:

Extremely straight posture:

Hunching is certainly bad for you, what with its effects on your confidence, self-esteem, and your spine. But sitting up too straight can also cause extreme strain on your spine, according to spine experts.

If you use a chair at your workplace regularly, make sure it is at a height where your knees are making a 90-degree angle, and that your feet are flat on the floor. This ensures that you have proper lower back support. Pro tip: make sure that you stand up, stretch and walk for a couple of minutes in between sitting sessions to ensure optimal health.

Running on hard surfaces:

Running on pavements, paved asphalt, or concrete is extremely taxing on your bones and joints. You might observe a major difference when you run on cement sidewalks or on concrete roads, but both are bad for your spine and put pressure on your joints.

When doing your runs, it is best to run a dirt trail or on a jogging track in your neighborhood park. Running on softer ground is less jarring for the bones, the spine, and the joints. Softer grounds also help strengthen your legs as they require more energy and effort to run forward.

Incense:

Burning incense is a very relaxing and pleasant experience, but it is, in fact, very harmful to your lungs. According to one study, there is a direct correlation between burning incense and respiratory tract carcinoma. For fresher smelling surroundings, opt for natural air fresheners instead.

Overthinking :

We tend to overthink and over-plan hoping this would solve our problems, but it is harmful to our mental health and even leads to depression. Mulling over things you have no control over and thinking of the past are both fruitless endeavors and it would wise of you to quit this habit for a happier life.
