Why Family Movies Are Taking Over Theaters in 2026

  • April 17, 2026

Theaters are buzzing with younger audiences like never before. With the release of "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie", studios are turning cinemas into a playground for kids, featuring coloring stations, collectible popcorn containers, and even mascot appearances.

This careful focus on young moviegoers reflects a larger trend: families are increasingly shaping the box office, and studios are responding in full force.

Universal Pictures anticipates that the five-day opening of the "Super Mario" sequel will generate approximately $186 million domestically and around $350 million worldwide. If achieved, it would outpace other recent hits targeting younger audiences, such as Pixar’s "Hoppers" ($297 million worldwide) and Amazon MGM’s "Project Hail Mary" ($300.8 million).

This isn’t a sudden shift but the result of a longer trajectory. In 2024, PG-rated films surpassed all other ratings in domestic box office revenue for the first time in decades, racking up $3.18 billion, according to Comscore.

The global top six included five PG-rated films: "Inside Out 2," "Moana 2," "Despicable Me 4," "Wicked," and "Mufasa: The Lion King."

Even in 2023, PG-rated movies led the charts, earning $2.96 billion domestically and outpacing PG-13 films. Top global performers included "Ne Zha 2," "Zootopia 2," "Lilo & Stitch," "A Minecraft Movie," and the PG-13-leaning "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which also attracted younger audiences.

Kids as the Driving Force in Moviegoing

Hollywood has faced challenging years. Mergers like Paramount Skydance’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and theater closures have created uncertainty.

Even with 2026 ticket sales trending upward, overall numbers remain 20% below pre-pandemic levels. AMC, the nation’s largest theater chain, has continued to close underperforming locations.

Yet kids are showing up in droves, signaling hope for movie theaters. Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of Cinema United, highlights the industry’s focus on younger viewers: “There’s a recognition that this is an increasingly important group of movie fans and we’re doing everything we can to make sure their experience is wonderful.”

Generation Alpha—children aged 12 and under—stands out as particularly enthusiastic. A study by the National Research Group found no other age group prefers watching movies on the big screen more than Gen Alpha.

O’Leary notes that research indicates younger audiences are “the fastest-growing demographic of people going to the movies,” and the industry is keen on cultivating lifelong moviegoers from this group.

Blockbusters Built for Families

Family-oriented franchises have become some of Hollywood’s biggest earners. In 2023, "The Super Mario Movie" grossed $1.36 billion globally. Its sequel is on track to approach similar numbers, joining a growing list of billion-dollar children’s films. Disney’s "Zootopia 2" recently set a record, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film with $1.87 billion.

Today’s kids, raised on smartphones, tablets, and streaming platforms, are influencing the market more than ever. Jim Orr, distribution chief at Universal, emphasizes that families want experiences outside the home: “Families want to do things. They want to make memories. No one talks about: Remember that great time when we sat on the couch?”

The focus on family films is intensifying. In 2026, 26 wide-release PG movies are scheduled, up from 24 in 2025 and 18 in 2024. The summer calendar alone is packed with family-friendly titles nearly every week, including "Toy Story 5" (June 19), "Minions & Monsters" (July 1), and the live-action "Moana" (July 10).

Other releases such as "The Mandalorian and Grogu" (May 22), "Supergirl" (June 26), and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" (July 31) are expected to draw younger audiences even though some are currently unrated.

The PG Comeback

Family films were among the hardest-hit genres during the pandemic, when many titles shifted to streaming. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore says the category “literally came back from near-extinction,” as theaters refocus on younger viewers.

Kids are now considered habitual moviegoers, attending six or more films per year. This trend extends beyond young children; last year, 41% of Gen Z moviegoers went to the theater at least six times, up from 31% two years prior.

Adult audiences are showing less interest, which has shifted the multiplex toward franchise blockbusters and family-friendly films. Dramas and comedies are struggling to attract crowds, while children and families are driving ticket sales.

O’Leary explains that families often see the theater as a break from screens at home. “In many instances, they’re going to the theater to get away from all of the other screens that inhabit their lives,” he says. The desire for shared experiences outside the living room is helping theaters remain relevant despite the rise of streaming.

Dergarabedian describes the current landscape as “PG is the new PG-13.” Where adult-leaning movies once anchored multiplexes, family films now dominate. “The kids that are going to the movies today are going to take their kids tomorrow,” he notes.

The continued production of family films ensures the sustainability of the theatrical experience.

The Shift in Moviegoing Culture

Studios are creating theaters as experiences for children. Interactive promotions, extended theatrical windows, and carefully timed releases appeal to young audiences. Universal recently extended its exclusive theatrical period from three weekends to five, boosting early box office returns.

Families value outings that are memorable. Despite the convenience of streaming, theaters remain a top choice. Children and parents enjoy shared experiences that cannot be replicated at home.

Family-friendly films are at the center of Hollywood. PG-rated movies now lead global revenue charts. Young audiences are returning in strong numbers. Franchises like "Super Mario" and "Zootopia 2" illustrate how kids influence cinema.

The continued focus on family films ensures theaters will remain vibrant and relevant for years.
